Tax Deductions for Home Based Businesses
A big advantage of working from home is the tax benefits of operating a home based business. Working from home allows you to deduct portions of bills that you are already paying to live there. You can deduct home expenses if you actually work in your home. It is easiest to do this if you have a room set aside for your business. Figure out how bit that room is in proportion to the house, and you can deduct expenses using that percentage.
You can deduct costs for your internet service provider in proportion to the amount you use it on business, too. If it's used completely for business you can deduct it all, but be certain before you do this that you are not using it for other reasons. The tax benefits of operating a home based business enable you to deduct things you would otherwise be paying in full. If you are considering a business from home, it's a good way to lower your costs. This is just one more advantage of working from home.

Financial Guide & Planning for your Home Based Business
Business experts say you should not expect a profit for the first eight to 10 months, so be sure to give yourself enough cushion.
Projecting Operating ExpensesInclude salaries, utilities, office supplies, loan payments, taxes, legal services and insurance premiums. Don't forget to include your normal living expenses.
Your business must not only meet its own needs, but make sure it meets yours as well.
Projecting IncomeIt is essential that you know how to estimate your sales on a daily and monthly basis. From the sales estimates, you can develop projected income statements, break-even points and cash-flow statements. Use your marketing research to estimate initial sales volume.
Determining Cash FlowWorking capital—not profits—pays your bills. Even though your assets may look great on the balance sheet, if your cash is tied up in receivables or equipment, your business is technically insolvent—in other words, you're broke.
Make a list of all anticipated expenses and projected income for each week and month. If you see a cash-flow crisis developing, cut back on everything but the necessities

Home based business idea: Information Broker/Researcher
Information researchers and information professionals use their research skills to obtain information for individuals and companies. If you like studying and doing academic research, this might be the business for you. While many researchers spend considerable time on the Internet, most also spend substantial time at libraries, county courts, and other locations where various records are kept. Private investigators and skip tracers are one type of professional researcher.
People and companies value their time and often prefer to hire specialized individuals to do time-consuming jobs, like research. In some cases, people don’t know how to go about collecting the information themselves. Companies and organizations can usually afford to spend the most on research.

Home based business - Myths & Reality
Reality: There are plenty of successful people that do not have a university or college education! Education is not will make you successful; proper planning, hard work, willingness to learn, dedication, and other factors will determine your success.
Myth: A great product idea is all you need to create a successful home based business.
Reality: Successful businesses tend to have great products ... but they also have:
Great products that people want, offered at a price people are willing to pay.
The ability to produce that product at a cost that still allows them to turn a profit.
Great marketing and advertising. No matter how wonderful a product is, it won't make money unless people know about it.
It isn't enough to have a great product idea. You also have to have the research and the resources to back it up.
Choosing a home-based business
You must enjoy doing the work involved. Just because you make super apple pies or wooden toys doesn't mean that you would want to create them six days a week. Perhaps you would rather teach others to make pies or toys! Teaching requires a totally different set of skills and interests than doing the actual work yourself

Remember, this is what your sole or main source of income will be so, it would only be reasonable to do something that you are good at and like doing. Also, is there a market for your line of work, is a weighty question to ask yourself.
You should now figure out what your anticipated costs are and, what your expenses and goals will be. You can do this by forming a well-written business plan. Your business plan should include things such as expenses, projected revenue, funding for your business and also short and long term goals.

More Set goals for your day.
Do not avoid overtime. When you first start your home-based business, you may need to work extra hours to get it to the point of running smoothly. If you have to work ten hours a day instead of eight, do not be afraid to invest this extra time.
Turn off distractions. If the television or radio are luring you away from your duties, turn them off. If you cannot avoid these distractions, try moving your office to another location in your home.

Security is an issue for any home-based worker...
Take the following basic precautions:
* Don't expose your expensive office equipment to the view of casual passersby. Obscure the view with foliage (but not so much that you provide a place for would-be intruders to hide) and draw the blinds when you're away from home.
* Keep your doors deadbolted when you're home as well as when you're away.
* Think twice about inviting new clients to your home office. Try and meet at the client's office wherever possible or, if not, at a neutral location.
* Ensure your property is well lit at night to deter intruders.
* Don't advertise the fact that you work from home.
* Consider using a post office box for your office address. This is particularly useful if you run an online business and are concerned about revealing your residential address to all and sundry. * Get an alarm system installed and display the alarm company's sign prominently on your property.
* A dog can be a great security device, not to mention company for the solo worker!
Most home-based businesses start out with only one person in the business.
The people you hire represent your business to the public. Sloppy workmanship and lack of pride in the product or service can make a potentially good product or service unacceptable in the market place. The image portrayed and the ultimate success of the business depends on the people working for you.

Tips for Avoiding Work at Home SCAMS
# Don’t believe that you can make big profits easily. Operating a home-based business is just like any other business – it requires hard work, skill, good products or services, and time to make a profit.
# Be cautious about emails offering work-at-home opportunities. Many unsolicited emails are fraudulent.
# Get all the details before you pay. A legitimate company will be happy to give you information about exactly what you will be doing and for whom.
# Find out if there is really a market for your work. Claims that there are customers for work such as medical billing and craft making may not be true. If the company says it has customers waiting, ask who they are and contact them to confirm. You can also ask likely customers in your area (such as doctors for medical billing services) if they actually employ people to do that work from home.
# Get references for other people who are doing the work. Ask them if the company kept its promises.
# Be aware of legal requirements. To do some types of work, such as medical billing, you may need a license or certificate. Check with your state attorney general’s office. Ask your local zoning board if there are any restrictions on operating a business from your home. Some types of work cannot be done at home under federal law. Look for the nearest U.S. Department of Labor in the government listings of your phone book.
# Know the refund policy. If you have to buy equipment or supplies, ask whether and under what circumstances you can return them for a refund.
# Beware of the old “envelope stuffing” scheme. In this classic scam, instead of getting materials to send out on behalf of a company, you get instructions to place an ad like the one you saw, asking people to send you money for information about working at home. This is an illegal pyramid scheme because there is no real product or service being offered. You won’t get rich, and you could be prosecuted for fraud.
# Be wary of offers to send you an “advance” on your “pay.” Some con artists use this ploy to build trust and get money from your bank. They send you a check for part of your first month’s “pay.” You deposit it, and the bank tells you the check has cleared because the normal time has passed to be notified that checks have bounced. Then the crook contacts you to say that you were mistakenly paid the wrong amount or that you need to return a portion of the payment for some other reason. After you send the money back, the check that you deposited finally bounces because it turned out to be an elaborate fake. Now the crooks have your payment, and you’re left owing your bank the amount that you withdrew.
# Do your own research about work-at-home opportunities. The “Work-At-Home Sourcebook” and other resources that may be available in your local library provide good advice and lists of legitimate companies that hire people to work for them at home. You may discover that these companies hire only local people and that there is nothing available in your area.

Once you start looking into work at home jobs...
If you are looking at different work at home jobs, remember to ask a lot of questions. The more informed you are, the less likely you will fall victim to a scam. If a company is not willing to give you answers or they are consistently vague, you should be skeptical. Be sure that the work at home jobs fit what you enjoy. Remember, you are trying to find work at home jobs that are enjoyable. If the work at home jobs feel like a chore, then you might as well stay in your office job. As you explore work at home jobs, try to focus on the positions that use your best skills and fit your needs
Tips on How to Start and Manage a Home Based Business
# Plan your day well. If necessary you should prepare yourself a “to do list” so that you will be guided in all your activities while working at home. Organize your tasks.
# In order for you to work properly in your home, be sure that you have the appropriate tools or things you needed to be able to work peacefully. Make sure that you are comfortable with your chair and table. In addition, you can even make your home office look like a real office.
Ideas and tips to get you started
Dress appropriately? Yes. Potential customers or clients are more likely to take you and your business seriously if you are dressed professionally. When deciding on how to dress appropriately and professionally, consider your line of work and how often you come into personal contact with your clients.
Make sure you promote yourself and your business. When running a home business, take into consideration all advertising possibilities within your reach. You may want to purchase web space, create business cards, and link up with other related business websites and useful ways of networking.
Effectively running a home business can be difficult, especially if you are just starting out. As with any business, you should research and plan accordingly. Taking care of legal matters, being professional, dressing appropriately, and promoting yourself will get you on the right track.

Medical transcription as Home Based Career: Prospects
It involves receiving dictation by tape, digital system or voice file, and using earphones, a foot pedal for start-stop control and a word processing program. It sometimes includes the use of a printer and sometimes a modem. A variety of word-processing systems are used. It requires good listening and language skills, computer skills and knowledge of medical terms.
With several transcription companies setting up their base in India, medical transcription has become a lucrative and feasible option for those looking for home-based careers.
According to Nasscom, medical transcription is projected as the India's fourth largest foreign exchange earners in about five years. If the figures are to be believed, medical transcription will employ more than 50,000 people by 2008. Very good news for people looking out for flexible home-based careers.

Put your talents and skills together and generate home based business ideas.
The procedure I’m outlining here will work for starting any kind of business, but as we’re focusing on home-based businesses, the question is, “With these talents and skills, what kind of home-based business could I start?”
Suppose you’re one of those people who has accounting and organizational skills and the talents to back them. Some of the home business ideas you come up with could include:
Tax preparation
Bookkeeping
Business manager
Professional organizer
And that’s just four ideas from our limited premise here. When you’re doing this exercise, you, of course, have more than one or two skills, so you’ll find that your list of possible home business ideas is much longer.
Don’t censor yourself as you list home business ideas. List all your ideas at this stage; crossing off choices comes later.

There are many reasons to commence your own home based business:
Freedom from authority – to be masters of your own destiny, your own space and your own time
To enjoy your work
An overall sense of well being that money can’t buy
Less stress
A challenge to be self reliant
Seeing your own ideas and work succeed
Saving time on travel
The freedom and flexibility to:
Work what hours they please
Put as much (or as little) effort in as they please
Start and stop work when it suits (many with babies work when the baby is asleep)
Feel satisfaction for having achieved something worthwhile by, and for, themselves
Low overheads, allowing them to trial an idea without an enormous loss if it is unsuccessful
To provide themselves with a job, rather than having an external employer
