10 Tips for Time Management for Your Home-Based Business

Time is money, and no one knows this better than home-based business owners. You work, you get paid. And if you don't work, well, no one will magically deposit a paycheck into your bank account twice a month.

For most home-based business owners, that's plenty of incentive to manage their time effectively. But how can you make the most of each work day? Start with these 10 tips:
Plan tomorrow today. Even the most successful and conscientious small business owners need help handling all they need to accomplish. Planning tomorrow's schedule today is a great way to get ahead. At the end of each workday, jot down a to-do list of things you want to accomplish tomorrow, in order of priority. That will get you prepared for tomorrow, and you'll avoid wasting time deciding or worrying about what should come next.

Get your priorities straight. Prioritize your tasks. All your activities can be broken down into categories in order of importance. If you need to be networking and finding new business leads, set a time frame for that task. Then set aside time for growing and expanding current business. Then check off all the other tasks that need to be completed by the end of the day.
Maximize downtime. Keep a notepad or tape recorder with you whenever you're away from the office. Jot down or record good ideas whenever they occur to you. Your cell phone also is a great tool. Call yourself and remind yourself of what you need to get done. If you’re traveling, bring your laptop and cell phone with you to the airport, and catch up on email and calls while you wait.

Emulate the early bird. Set your alarm clock for an hour before the rest of the family is due to get up. Get up and get an early start crossing off to-do items on your checklist.
Take breaks. Set aside time for breaks during the day to recharge and reenergize. It’s amazing how much something as simple as a half-hour walk or lunch (not at your desk!) can do to clear your mind and help you refocus on your goals.

Strike a balance. The key to time management is balancing your activities so that your life is not all work and no play. You have to make time to do the things necessary to keep your business growing, but don't do it at the expense of the things you need to do to keep yourself growing.

Pay attention to the little things. It’s the little things that can trip you up and waste time. For example, using dial-up for your computer instead of a high-speed connection to the Internet costs you time. Connecting a fax machine to your main phone line every time you need to send or receive a fax costs you time, as does going back and forth to a printer set up in a different room. Each of these items may only take a few seconds here or there, but in aggregate they can add up and cost you big chunks of your day.

Take out the trash. Throw away everything you don't need as soon as it lands in your mailbox. This will keep junk email and snail mail from piling up and becoming a major distraction.

Stay focused. Yes, the laundry is piling up, and the dishwasher needs to be emptied. But the truth is there will always be things that you could be doing instead of working. But to run a successful home-based business, many times you'll just have to ignore these distractions and stay focused on the task at hand.

Separate church and state. To manage your time working at home efficiently, you have to delegate what hours are for what. Explain to family — especially children — that you aren't choosing work over spending time with them, but that you have to work during work hours. Once the workday is over, focus entirely on your family, and don't let business intrude on your time with them. Source

How to Grow a Home-Based Business Wisely

Growing a home-based business shares many aspects of growing a traditional small business. There are however a few specific details you need to consider in deciding if it is time to grow and how to do it. The following are a few areas of business you should check in order to help you make wise decisions about growth:

1) Overhead

One of the greatest advantages of a home-based business is you have very little overhead in comparison with a traditional small business. If growing is not going to increase your overhead costs along with your profit, generally you're making a good move. You have to use caution to make sure growing isn't going to harm you more than it helps.

There comes a certain point in some home businesses where it just makes sense to move it out of your home. If you feel like your business has swallowed up your whole house, it may be an option to consider for your sanity and for your family. Rent space first before you buy since you often have little idea if a specific location is going to help you or not. Make sure you can pay the rent without having to borrow the money or having a major loss in profit every month.

2) Time

If you are the only one doing the work for your business, you want to make sure that the profit is going to be worth it in relation to any extra time you have to spend. Ideally, most businesses should require the most intense work in the first few years and take less and less of your time long-term.

If you decide you need more help but fear traditional employees would drain you, consider negotiating a situation where anyone who works for you gets a percentage of the profits they create for you. Avoid legal partnerships however because a majority of those end in disaster when two or more people's goals begin to go different directions. If you are considering adding more people to your business, I would recommend consulting a local business attorney in your area to make sure of the details that would apply and getting their advice.

3) Quality versus Quantity Growth

This can apply to product and service businesses. If you have a service business and have grown in experience, consider raising your rates for new customers. This will increase your profits and decrease your work load. If you're selling products, consider diversifying into higher quality products with greater profit margins. You don't have to give up your existing products, just offer more options.

In other situations, you just need to offer more of what you already have. In making these decisions, you may want to do some experimenting on a smaller scale to see what will work and what won't.

4) Cash Flow

In home-based businesses especially, you should never need to borrow money to expand. This is what sinks a majority of businesses period because beginning profits can't outrun the interest of loan payments. You can get stuck in a financial cycle or even fall behind and lose your progress you've worked so hard to build. It's hard sometimes, but exercising patience will help you succeed.

5) Ability to Diversify

Are there areas related to your current business that it would just make sense to branch into? Since you may already have experience and education, learning a related aspect of business would take less time and give you more stability.

I hope these ideas have been helpful to you. Best wishes to you in growing your business!

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Running A Home Based Business

Working from home is an activity that does not spell success for each and everyone. As a matter of fact, there are those who will try it for a while only to give up and instead once again enter the workforce. When asked, they will be honest in stating that the idea of a home based business sounded nice in the beginning, but in the end, the disadvantages outweighed the advantages, and they find that they are happening in a more traditional work environment. On the flipside of this coin are those what throw off the shackles of the nine to five jobs and practically soar professionally with their home based business. These individuals cannot imagine themselves ever going back to working a traditional job.

For those workers who have families, and especially young children, a home based business is a dream come true simply for the fact that they will be able to spend a lot of time at home being available to the children when they are at home, and working when the kids are in school. Yet those who find that their normally free time is eaten up by work demands of a home business, a traditional job with set business hours is a better solution. Similarly, if you do not have the energy to work after hours, such as when the children are in bed, you will find that a home based business will indeed begin to cut in on your available family time. In a few cases the fact that a person is always home - at first with the kids and then with work - also adds up to a sizeable disadvantage.

Counteracting this disadvantage is the advantage of being your own boss, calling the shots, and no longer having to kowtow to someone else's idea of how things should be run - especially if you are highly skilled in your field and know what needs to be done and how to do it. Without lengthy commuting time, you will have more time to devote to your skill, and thus more ability to make a profit for your home based business. A distinct advantage in many fields, especially real estate and marketing, there are some disadvantages to being your own boss, namely the need to accept certain distractions by ancillary activities, such as accounting and tax preparation, which normally are left to the boss. Similarly, if you are not a self starter but rely on the motivation from a boss or supervisor, you will soon find that being your own boss is more of a disadvantage to you, since you will have nobody holding you accountable on progress and overall productivity.

Consider also if you find that going to an office each and every day is an advantage to you or a disadvantage. Lacking this interaction with other workers for many is negligible, but for some it is a vital component of daily life, and thus will be sorely missed once gone. By honestly assessing the advantages and disadvantages of running a home based business, you will be certain to make the right choice when deciding whether or not you wish to give it a try!

Home Business Success - it May not be Easy But it Sure is Worth it

Skeptics scoff and laugh at those of us who start home businesses. I wish I had a dollar for every person who said to me, "That won't work. It's a scam or it won't last." I'd have more money than Oprah. Sure there are scams out there but should you let therm stop you? I've eaten more than a few bad meals in my day but that didn't stop me from eating!

There are plenty of home based businesses that are legitimate and honest and these businesses can change your life forever! It took a few times to find the right one for our family, but when we did we knew it right away.

After we got rolling we decided to home school our kids and take a great vacation since they had basically never been anywhere other than to their grandparents house on summer break. We took a month long vacation to Arizona. We sat by the pool everyday and did math and history. Because we put in the work in the beginning of our business we were able to stay on vacation for as long as we wanted... literally. One month rolled into the next and since we didn't own a traditional business we had the money and the time freedom to keep on traveling and enjoying life. Our family got to spend more time together than any other family I know.

Keep in mind that we had to work hard to grow our home business but once we had achieved success it was easy to work a little and play a lot. Over the years we have been on many more wonderful vacations. We took our children to see the shuttle launch when John Glenn went back up into space. We spent 2 1/2 years out in Los Angeles while our kids tried their hand at acting. As the kids got older my wife and I began to take trips without the kids and do things that we as a couple truly enjoy.

It gives us great pleasure to be able to not only do things that we want to do, but also to be able to make others dreams come true. One of the most memorable things we've done is a 7 week vacation covering 18 states and 2 Canadian provinces. It was different from most vacations because we took my parents with us for almost 3 weeks. My father had always wanted to see a Broadway Show in New York, and we made his dream come true. We saw the Pro Football Hall of Fame, The Baseball Hall of Fame and did more than our share of shopping with my wife and mother.

We took my mother-in-law on a trip so she could do something that she had always wanted to do. Nobody knew that she had wanted to go to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, and at the age of 73 she went up in a hot air balloon for the very first time.

You may be thinking, "All this stuff sounds great, but that's not what I would do if I had both the time and the money." One of the most exciting things about owning your own home based business is setting your own personal and financial goals. It's strictly up to you how much money you make and how hard you work and even what hours you work.

Starting a home based business isn't easy at first, but it is totally worth it. Just think about what YOU would be doing if you had your choice to go anywhere you want to go and stay there as long as you want to. If you want what you've never had, you must be willing to do what you've never done. Go out there and find the home business that is right for you. Don't listen to the naysayers, work hard and it will definitely be worth it!
